A painting based on one of my favourite parables: The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector found in Luke 18:9-14
THE STORY
The law was given as a mirror to reveal our sin before a holy God, yet the Pharisee used it to judge others and exalt himself rather than recognizing his own need for mercy. In contrast, the tax collector approached God with humility, being aware of his sinfulness and his inability to rely on his own works to be declared righteous before God. Though despised by society, the tax collector was the one Jesus declared justified because he trusted in God’s mercy rather than his own goodness.
Scripture teaches that our righteousness falls short before God: Isaiah 64:6 “For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment.”
We are not saved by our own works, but through faith in Jesus Christ, who lived the perfect, sinless life we could never have lived.
Romans 4:5 “But to the one who does not work, but believes upon Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness.”
Pride causes us to depend on ourselves and believe we can stand before God through our own righteousness. But humility recognizes that apart from Him we can do nothing... our only hope is His grace. The tax collector’s prayer reminds us that the posture God desires is not self-righteousness, but a heart that comes before Him in repentance, surrender, and dependence. Through faith in Christ, we receive what we could never earn ourselves: forgiveness, righteousness, and peace with God.
Romans 5:1 “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
