Before Solomon reigned, the Lord asked him what he desired, and instead of asking for riches, power, or a long life, he asked for an understanding heart to lead with righteousness. Because of his humility, God gave him wisdom beyond measure, and peace and honor surrounded his reign. Solomon received respect and great abundance for his knowledge.
But at the height of all his success, he disobeyed God. The Lord had warned Israel not to marry foreign wives who would turn their hearts after other gods, yet Solomon did exactly that and his heart was turned away from the Lord.
Proverbs 15:16 “Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble with it.”
Centuries later, Jesus points to Solomon and declares in Matthew 12:42 "Behold, something greater than Solomon is here.”
Solomon's glory faded, but Jesus is the eternal King of kings, whose kingdom will never end. Unlike Solomon, His power and majesty is everlasting. He alone has conquered the greatest battle of sin and death and reigns victoriously.
Matthew 6:28-29
“28 And why are you anxious about clothing?
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,
29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”
