The History Behind the Painting

Located in Nagasaki, Japan, is St. Francis Xavier Memorial Church, a stunning neo-Gothic landmark. Originally built in 1913 as the Hirado Catholic Church, it was later relocated in 1931 to its current hilltop position, offering breathtaking views of Hirado’s harbor and town. Its tall steeple and elevated location make it one of the most recognizable structures in the area, standing above a nearby Buddhist temple, pointing people's eyes toward the cross.

The church's European-inspired design features pointed arches, elegant stained-glass windows, and a towering steeple, reflecting the Western influence brought by early missionaries.

It is named after St. Francis Xavier, the Jesuit missionary who introduced Christianity to Japan in 1549, making the church a symbol of faith and perseverance.

Between the 1600s to 1853, Japanese Christians were persecuted, tortured and executed. However, some continued to secretly practice their faith, becoming known as "Hidden Christians." Then in 1873, Japan officially lifted the ban on Christianity!

After World War II, Japan's new constitution guaranteed religious freedom. Though Christianity remained a minority faith, today there are approximately 1-2 million Christians, making up about 1-2% of the population. Despite its small numbers, Christianity has made a lasting impact leading more and more people to the love and of Jesus in Japan :)
