Perched on the stunning Deir El Nourieh cliffs in Hamat, Lebanon, Our Lady of Nourieh Monastery is a sacred Greek Orthodox site with a rich spiritual history. I was captivated not only by its beautiful architectural design but also by the breathtaking natural scenery that surrounds it.

Lebanon has played a crucial role in the history of Christianity, dating back to the 1st century. The region is mentioned in the Bible multiple times, and early Christian communities flourished here. As recorded in the Gospels, Jesus himself visited the region of Tyre and Sidon (present-day Lebanon). St. Peter is believed to have preached in Lebanon, and St. Paul traveled through the region, converting many of the people's heart to Christianity. By the 4th century, Christianity had become deeply rooted in Lebanon, leading to the construction of churches and monasteries that still stand today.

Through my painting, I aimed to capture not only the monastery’s beauty but also its deep connection to Lebanon’s enduring Christian heritage—a reflection of their unwavering devotion and the resilience of their faith.

Jesus Performs a Miracle in Lebanon

In Matthew 15: 21-28, Jesus performed a miracle in the region of Tyre and Sidon, located in present-day Lebanon. At the time many believed that His mission was to save only the Jews, however, here Jesus tested the faith of a Canaanite woman to reveal that by faith all can be saved. Using the analogy of crumbs falling from the master’s table, He demonstrated that even a small portion of the "bread of life" is enough for anyone to receive His grace.

Matthew 15: 21-28

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.” 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” 25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. 26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.
